EPIT Group Launches New Hydrogen Safety Course to Support Energy Transition

EPIT Group has launched a new two-day Hydrogen Safety & Explosion Protection Awareness course at its Aberdeen facility. Developed in collaboration with industry partners, the course is designed to equip professionals with essential knowledge and skills to safely harness hydrogen as a low carbon energy vector.

EPIT Group, a leading provider of specialised training and consultancy services in the fields of hazardous area safety and explosion protection, proudly announces the launch of its Hydrogen Safety & Explosion Protection Awareness course. This two day training course, taking place at EPIT’s bespoke training facility in Aberdeen, is designed to help those working to realize hydrogen’s potential as a low carbon energy vector, to do so safely. Developed in collaboration with industry partners, this course ensures comprehensive and up-to-date content

Hydrogen is one of the low carbon energy solutions that will be critical for the UK’s transition to net zero. But using hydrogen as an energy carrier is not a new phenomenon, hydrogen has been manufactured, used, or dealt with as a byproduct by industry for over 100 years across several sectors, and has been handled safely by a professional workforce with few incidents and accidents.

With more novel and innovative applications for hydrogen anticipated as the UK makes progress towards its 2050 net zero deadline, individuals and workplaces need to be kept safe from new risks, whilst not forgetting those that existed before. A fundamental understanding of hydrogen’s physical properties and key behaviors will be key to safely developing and deploying it as a net zero energy vector, and EPIT Group is addressing the need for a baseline level of knowledge with the launch of a new hydrogen safety course.

Course Overview

The hydrogen safety course is designed to give an introduction to hydrogen energy and the hazardous area concepts for the use of electrical and non-electrical equipment where hydrogen gas is present. The course explains the applications for hydrogen, the different types of hydrogen, and the dangers of hydrogen.

The course also provides information, based on the requirements of EN/IEC 60079 and EN ISO/IEC 80079 standards, for hazardous areas and the relevant explosion protected (Ex) equipment that can be used in them.

Participants will gain insights into the different types of hydrogen, the processes involved in its production and utilization, as well as the associated demands and dangers. The knowledge gained from the course will aid delegates in identifying hazards posed by the introduction of hydrogen into their own environments, enabling them to design appropriate procedures to mitigate risk. Delegates will also learn about the regulations that relate to the use of hydrogen and when they apply, helping to ensure a safer transition to the low carbon energy vector.

Course Content

The course encompasses a broad range of topics critical to understanding and managing hydrogen-related hazards, including:

  • Introduction to Hydrogen Energy
  • Hazardous Area Classification
  • Certification, Documentation & Labelling
  • Ignition Properties
  • EN / IEC 60079 & 80079 Standards
  • Ingress Protection
  • Ex Methods of Protection for Electrical Equipment
  • Ex Methods of Protection for Non-Electrical (Mechanical) Equipment
  • Hybrid Ex Equipment
  • Inspection & Maintenance of Equipment
  • Repair & Overhaul of Equipment

Target Audience

This hydrogen safety training is ideal for personnel with backgrounds in electrical, instrumentation, or mechanical fields within the industry who seek a foundational understanding of hydrogen energy, hazardous areas, and explosion protection equipment and systems. It is particularly beneficial for those involved in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment in potentially explosive hydrogen atmospheres.

Martin Constable, Operations Director of EPIT Group, said:  “A recent study by Hydrogen UK projects that the UK’s hydrogen sector will support 64,000 British jobs by 2030. A significant portion of these jobs will be in hydrogen production, accounting for 8,500 direct jobs. These opportunities are expected to be distributed across the UK, benefiting industrial clusters and regions like Scotland and Tees Valley. Furthermore, the hydrogen sector presents a chance for the transition of hundreds of thousands of oil and gas jobs to sustainable, low-carbon alternatives, indicating a broader trend of growth and numerous job opportunities for industry professionals in the coming years.

With over 20 years of experience in providing successful training and certification programs across various industries, including oil and gas and renewables, EPIT is perfectly positioned to support the new labor force required for the hydrogen sector with relevant and comprehensive training.”

EPIT Group invites industry professionals to enroll in this essential hydrogen safety training and join the movement towards a safer, more sustainable energy future.

I did compex 01-04. English is not my first language. I got extra support, a bit of extra explonation, extra advice. All of this was super helpful. The instructors were very knowlagable, passionate and well tempered. I failed one of the units but I passed it second time.

Done the CompEx Ex01-Ex04 with Mike and Dodd, and they were both excellent! They both broke things down and made them easier to understand, as well as being genuinely good people who you can have a normal conversation and laugh with!

An absolutely brilliant training and test facility that made the dreaded "Compex Refresher" course, a far more enjoyable and beneficial experience. From the great training material to the very knowledgeable instructors, it all helped to teach us about the new practices and standards in Compex and I certainly left knowing more than I did when I walk through the door Monday morning. Thanks to the all staff! 5*
