FAQs

Who is responsible for PAT testing?

Under the UK Health and Safety at Work Act and Electricity at Work Regulations, employers (or duty-holders) have a legal requirement to maintain equipment to prevent danger, regular inspection and testing would be part of this maintenance activity.

How often should PAT testing be carried out?

This depends on many factors, e.g. the environment the equipment’s used in, the equipment type, the frequency of equipment’s use, the equipment’s previous inspection and test records. A documented risk assessment should be carried out on each item of equipment to determine the frequency of inspection and testing required.

What does typical PAT inspection involve?
  1. Visual check for damage to plugs, cables and enclosures, opening plugs & checking fuse s
  2. Earth continuity test (for Class I appliances)
  3. Insulation resistance test to detect hidden faults
  4. Functional check to confirm the appliance operates correctly
  5. Record-keeping of results in logbooks or e-certificates

How long does it take to become certified in PAT testing?

EPIT’s City and Guilds approved In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment course (PAT Testing) is delivered over two days with a mix of theory and practical training and assessments.

What records must I keep after PAT testing?
  1. A register of all equipment. New equipment, as it is purchased, should be added to this list and equipment disposed of should be removed from it.
  2. A record of all equipment inspections and tests
  3. An equipment repair or maintenance register
  4. A Test instrument log and calibration record
Although it is not a requirement, it is good practice to ensure that all equipment requiring regular inspection and testing is clearly identifiable.

What is PAT testing and why is it important?

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is the inspection and electrical testing of equipment to ensure its continued safe use.

Does cordless or battery-operated equipment need PAT testing?

Yes – The battery-operated equipment should be inspected, and the battery charging equipment should be inspected and tested.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement offshore?

The UK Electricity at Work Regulations, Regulation 4 paragraph 2, make it a legal requirement to maintain equipment to prevent danger, regular inspection and testing would be part of this maintenance activity. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides guidance on offshore health and safety, including the need for employers to control risks and ensure a safe work environment. Regular inspection and testing of equipment in a harsh offshore environment would be a crucial step in ensuring the safety of equipment.

What qualifications do I need to carry out PAT testing?

While no formal qualifications are required, personnel involved with the inspection and testing of equipment should be competent to carry out the necessary work. Training, including regular update training, would form part of this required competence.

How can I stay compliant after initial certification?

Regular refresher training. This is typically every 3-5 years or when guidance/standards are updated, whichever is soonest.

I did compex 01-04. English is not my first language. I got extra support, a bit of extra explonation, extra advice. All of this was super helpful. The instructors were very knowlagable, passionate and well tempered. I failed one of the units but I passed it second time.

Done the CompEx Ex01-Ex04 with Mike and Dodd, and they were both excellent! They both broke things down and made them easier to understand, as well as being genuinely good people who you can have a normal conversation and laugh with!

An absolutely brilliant training and test facility that made the dreaded "Compex Refresher" course, a far more enjoyable and beneficial experience. From the great training material to the very knowledgeable instructors, it all helped to teach us about the new practices and standards in Compex and I certainly left knowing more than I did when I walk through the door Monday morning. Thanks to the all staff! 5*
