The Essential Guide to the 18th Edition
Wiring Regulations Qualification

By taking a course on the 18th Edition wiring regulations, you’re investing in your professional development, enhancing your skills, and ensuring that you can work safely and effectively in compliance with the latest British standards. This qualification is essential for staying competitive in the electrical industry, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and advancing your career.

If you work in the electrical industry in the UK, understanding the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) is crucial. At EPIT Group, we’ve been providing the IET Wiring Regulations courses for over 8 years and are proud of our outstanding delegate feedback and high assessment success rate.

This qualification ensures that electricians are up-to-date with the current regulations, which are essential for the safety, reliability, and efficiency of electrical systems.

What is the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations Qualification?

The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, also known as BS 7671:2018+A2:2022, are the latest set of standards governing electrical installations in the UK. These regulations are essential for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of electrical systems. The 18th Edition qualification certifies that electricians are knowledgeable about these standards, enabling them to design, install, inspect, and test electrical installations competently.

Key Updates in the 18th Edition

Introduced in July 2018, the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations brought several crucial updates:

  1. Protection Against Overvoltages: Emphasis on protection from transient overvoltages.
  2. Protection Against Electric Shock: Enhanced regulations to prevent electric shock.
  3. Inspection and Testing: Improved requirements for periodic inspection and testing.
  4. Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs): Recommended for reducing fire risks.
  5. Residual Current Devices (RCDs): Expanded use for shock and fire protection.
  6. Energy Efficiency: Guidelines to improve the energy efficiency of installations.
  7. Fire Safety: Additional measures to mitigate fire risks.
  8. Earthing Arrangements: Updated requirements for enhanced safety.

New Amendment Published on 28th March 2022

A new amendment to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, published on 28th March 2022, includes significant updates to enhance safety and efficiency in electrical installations.

Key points include:

  •  Prosumer’s Electrical Installations (PEIs):
    • Introduction of regulations for PEIs, addressing the integration of electrical installations with renewable energy sources like solar panels and energy storage systems.
  • Protection Against Fire:
    • New requirements for the use of AFDDs in certain types of installations to reduce the risk of fire caused by electrical arcing.
  • Updates to Wiring Systems:
    • Enhanced requirements for the installation and protection of cables, especially in terms of fire resistance and minimizing the spread of fire.
  • Earthing and Bonding:
    • Revised guidelines on earthing and bonding to improve safety measures and ensure proper installation practices.
  • Requirements for RCDs:
    • Expanded requirements for the use of RCDs to protect against electric shock and reduce the risk of electrical fires.
  • Inspection and Testing:
    • Updated procedures and intervals for the periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations to ensure ongoing compliance and safety.
  • Energy Efficiency:
    • Additional guidance on designing and installing energy-efficient electrical systems, taking into account environmental impact and sustainability.
  • Special Locations and Installations:
    • New and updated regulations for specific types of installations and locations, such as medical facilities, agricultural buildings, and temporary structures, to address unique safety and operational challenges.
  • Cable Management:
    • Enhanced guidelines on the proper management and routing of cables to prevent damage and ensure safe operation, including considerations for thermal effects and mechanical protection.

These updates have several significant impacts:

Safety Improvements: enhanced protection against electric shocks, fires, and overvoltages.

Regulatory Compliance: ensures installations comply with the latest standards.

Energy Efficiency: encourages the design of more energy efficient electrical systems.

Technological Integration: facilitates the integration of new technologies like AFDDs and renewable energy sources.

Is the 18th Edition Qualification Worth It?

Enhanced employability, professional credibility and career advancement: many employers require this qualification, making you more marketable. The qualification ensures your work meets the latest legal and safety standards. It demonstrates your commitment to staying current in your field and opens doors to advanced roles and specialised positions.

How Long Does the Qualification Last?

The 18th Edition qualification does not expire. However, as staying up to date with regulation changes or amendments is essential to ensure ongoing compliance and safety, recertification on the Wiring Regulations course should be no longer than 5 years.

I did compex 01-04. English is not my first language. I got extra support, a bit of extra explonation, extra advice. All of this was super helpful. The instructors were very knowlagable, passionate and well tempered. I failed one of the units but I passed it second time.

Done the CompEx Ex01-Ex04 with Mike and Dodd, and they were both excellent! They both broke things down and made them easier to understand, as well as being genuinely good people who you can have a normal conversation and laugh with!

An absolutely brilliant training and test facility that made the dreaded "Compex Refresher" course, a far more enjoyable and beneficial experience. From the great training material to the very knowledgeable instructors, it all helped to teach us about the new practices and standards in Compex and I certainly left knowing more than I did when I walk through the door Monday morning. Thanks to the all staff! 5*
