Understanding the Differences Between IECEx Courses: Selecting the Right Training Path

Understanding the Differences Between IECEx Courses: Selecting the Right Training Path

Organisations operating within hazardous environments often recognise the importance of developing competency in explosive atmospheres. However, selecting the most suitable IECEx training pathway can sometimes present challenges.

Many courses share common principles and standards, which can make it difficult to understand where the differences lie. While several training programmes cover explosive atmosphere fundamentals, each course is designed to support specific responsibilities across the lifecycle of hazardous area equipment and systems.

Understanding these differences can help organisations align training with job roles, operational requirements and competency objectives.

Why Training Requirements Vary

Hazardous area operations involve a wide range of activities beyond simply working with explosion-protected equipment. Personnel may be involved in entering hazardous locations, installing equipment, carrying out inspections, maintaining systems or conducting repairs.

As responsibilities change, the knowledge requirements also change.

Typical activities can include:

  • Entering and working within hazardous locations
  • Understanding explosion-protection principles
  • Installation and testing activities
  • Inspection and maintenance
  • Equipment repair and overhaul
  • Emerging technologies such as hydrogen systems

Selecting training based only on a course title can sometimes lead to gaps in knowledge or training that extends beyond operational requirements.

Hazardous Area Awareness and Fundamentals

For personnel who require an introductory understanding of hazardous areas, awareness-based learning can provide the necessary foundation.

The Basic Knowledge and Awareness to Enter Hazardous Area Sites (IECEx Unit Ex 000) course focuses on fundamental knowledge required for individuals entering hazardous area locations, including hazards, signage, safety procedures and responsibilities.

Similarly, Principles of Protection in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx Unit Ex 001) provides broader understanding of protection concepts and explosion-protected equipment principles for personnel involved across engineering and operational functions.

These courses typically support:

  • Engineering personnel
  • Procurement teams
  • Operations personnel
  • Commissioning teams
  • Personnel entering hazardous environments for the first time

Installation and Testing Activities

Personnel responsible for installation activities require more detailed technical knowledge beyond fundamental principles.

The Installation & Testing of Hazardous Area Equipment programme (IECEx Units Ex 001, Ex 003, & Ex 006) focuses on:

  • Equipment selection
  • Installation requirements
  • Cable termination techniques
  • Electrical testing requirements
  • Application of IEC 60079-14 requirements

This training is intended for personnel directly involved in installing and testing electrical systems operating within explosive atmospheres.

Inspection and Maintenance Responsibilities

Once equipment enters operational service, maintaining its integrity becomes essential.

The Maintenance & Inspection of Hazardous Area Equipment (IECEx Units Ex 001, Ex 004, Ex 007 & Ex 008) programme focuses on:

  • Maintenance requirements
  • Visual and close inspections
  • Detailed inspection techniques
  • Identification of non-conformities
  • Ongoing equipment integrity management

This learning pathway is designed for personnel responsible for maintaining operational safety and compliance throughout equipment lifecycles.

Combined Lifecycle Training

Some roles require knowledge across several stages of equipment operation.

The Installation, Testing, Maintenance & Inspection of Hazard Area Equipment (IECEx Units Ex 001, Ex 003, Ex 004, Ex 006, Ex 007 & Ex 008) programme combines multiple IECEx units and covers installation, testing, maintenance and inspection requirements together.

This may be suitable where personnel have responsibilities extending across multiple operational disciplines.

Repair, Overhaul and Emerging Technologies

Specialist activities often require focused knowledge.

For personnel involved in equipment servicing activities, Overhaul and Repair of Hazardous Area Equipment (IECEx Units Ex 001 & Ex 005) addresses repair and overhaul requirements based on IEC 60079-19.

In addition, emerging technologies continue to create new competency requirements. The Safety of Hydrogen Systems & Principles of Protection in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx Units Ex 001 & Ex 011) programme combines explosion-protection principles with hydrogen safety considerations.

As hydrogen applications continue to expand across industry, specialised knowledge in these areas is becoming increasingly relevant.

Conclusion

Developing competency within hazardous areas involves more than completing a single training programme. Different activities require different levels of knowledge and technical understanding.

By understanding the purpose of each IECEx pathway, organisations can align training requirements with operational responsibilities and help ensure personnel develop the competencies relevant to their role.

EPIT offers a range of IECEx training programmes designed to support personnel across all stages of the hazardous area lifecycle, from awareness and fundamentals through to inspection, maintenance and specialist applications.
